Meet the Artist.

I have always loved the freedom of collage and the discovery of unpredictable combinations. Whatever the materials I am working with, the process of cutting, combining and joining is always at the heart of my practice.

My abstract work develops intuitively with an experimental and expressive approach. My real interest lies in exploring colour, line and texture and I have always had an interest in abstract art. Working with a broad range of materials and techniques including painting, mono printing and stitch, I immerse myself in the process and see where it leads. Over time, the combinations of materials and colours create vibrant, multi-layered surfaces.

Moving towards abstraction

I no longer feel a need for there to be recognisable imagery in my work and this has allowed me to experiment more freely. As well as texture and colour, I am also interested in gestural and calligraphic marks and indirectly, I respond to what I see as I move through life: the marks and colours on an old stone wall in Italy, inscriptions in the Alhambra, patterns in Kenya.

I hope that when the viewer engages with the work, they will feel an energy from the surface and colours, and make connections with their own experiences of the world around them.

Being an artist educator

I have been teaching art to both children and adults for over twenty years and it has been a fantastic way to both share my knowledge and skills and keep learning about my own practice and the wider art world . Since 2014, I have been Head of Art at King’s College in Taunton and have particularly enjoyed working with A level pupils, helping them to prepare their portfolios and begin their creative careers at some of the top universities in the UK.

I have also been fortunate enough to travel to Kenya and run children’s workshops in some beautiful locations and I have been working with Restart Africa to help them provide art materials and bring creativity to the children they rescue from the street. I have also enjoyed running some fantastic adult workshops and sharing my work with local art groups.
